The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
